I did—

First we should say any NPC ship (except for the starter ships) is fair game, but any PC owned ships would need permission and plot out what happens there (like if they get it back or if something is arranged that they can get a new ship or something).

Now for the NPC ships, it would largely depend whose ship someone tries to steal. It can be assumed that most ships will have anti-theft measures, be it posted security or some kind of system on the ship itself. The ones from the Paladins and the merchants in particular will have invested in protecting their ships, while the Corsairs will be hit or miss, some relying on their own strength, steel, and notoriety to not have someone be foolish enough to try.

But it's not impossible! —And not without consequences.

Again, it will depend on whose ship:

  • If it's a Corsair ship, well that's pretty common. Wouldn't be surprising if it's something like a sport or challenge they pit against each other, but Corsairs do pride themselves on their ship (which is another reason many try to steal each other's). However, just because it happens doesn't mean they like it. The "adventuring" type Corsairs might not put up much of a fight, but the more vicious brand will be more likely to be vengeful and try to get their ship back. And if the owners put a Hit on the ship thieves, then a lot more Corsairs will participate, more so for the sport and hope for reward than helping a friend. Of course if the original captain is killed or incapacitated and the crew give up, well that's that. No one will kick up a fuss, but don't be too surprised if someone else tries to steal it for their own, continuing the cycle.

  • If it's a Paladin, merchant, or any other neutral party ship, then it will be instant bounty and the Paladins will be a lot fiercer in getting that ship back to its proper owner or whatever affiliation it belongs to. And with a bounty on their head, the Corsairs will happily join in, again for the fun and reward of it. Some Corsairs might try and assist the thieves if it's a Paladin ship, though, because hey, stole a Paladin ship—respect. It'll be harder to "keep" the ship since some Paladin group (NPC or PC) will always be on the look out to try and get it back, but it would otherwise be considered theirs by the Corsairs.

TL;DR sure you can, but it won't be smooth sailing! Pull it off, however, and you can reap in the rewards and prestige of ship stealing amongst the Corsair.
